The phone call came a random night in July.
It took a couple weeks, but I made the decision to travel down a serious fork in the road. I headed west, back to my roots and back to a game that helped make me who I am.
That was less than two months ago, and I've been experiencing a steep learning curve ever since.
One might think coaching would come naturally for someone who shot hoops well enough to earn a college scholarship. Yes, I worked hard enough to tally a few points and play clean up crew on the boards, but I never studied the game. I had too many other interests and lived on the theory that my work ethic and love of the game would carry me to success. In retrospect, I wonder how much better I could have been if I would have concentrated on the game just a bit more.
But, maybe that's why I am where I am right now. Life's not about regrets, it's about choices and opportunities. My current role as a coach is a chance to learn the intricacies of the game and perhaps assist and inspire others.
I am learning the excessive amount of planning and organization that goes into coaching. "It takes a village to raise a child" is an understatement when dealing with a team of 14. So what's my role in the family? I'm in charge of team travel ... etc.
